Key Ingredients for Best Cottage Cheese Lasagna

Cottage Cheese

For the best cottage cheese lasagna, the quality of the cottage cheese matters. I recommend using a full-fat variety for that rich and creamy texture. If you’re looking for a lighter option, part-skim cottage cheese can work, but I find that it often lacks the same indulgent flavor.

Marinara Sauce

A good marinara sauce is key to elevating your lasagna. Whether you choose a store-bought version or make your own, opt for a sauce that has a balance of acidity and sweetness. This combination complements the ricotta and mozzarella perfectly, creating layers of flavor that are simply irresistible.

Mozzarella Cheese

Mozzarella is essential for that gooey, melted topping that everyone loves. I usually go for the whole-milk mozzarella for its creaminess, and I suggest shredding it yourself for the best meltability. Pre-shredded cheese can have anti-caking agents that hinder that nice stretch.

Lasagna Noodles

Choose no-boil lasagna noodles for a convenient, tender layer in your dish. These cook perfectly in the oven as the casserole bakes, absorbing all the flavors of the cheese and sauce.

Spinach

Adding fresh or frozen spinach not only boosts the nutrition but also adds flavor and a beautiful color to the dish. If using frozen, make sure to squeeze out excess moisture to avoid a watery lasagna.

Eggs

Incorporating eggs into the cottage cheese mixture helps bind everything together, making for a cohesive slice. I’ve found that two large eggs provide the right texture, ensuring your pieces hold up nicely when served.

These ingredients come together to create that best cottage cheese lasagna experience, full of flavor and comfort.

  • Layering Techniques: When constructing your lasagna, think about the order of your layers. Start with a layer of sauce; this helps prevent the noodles from sticking. Alternate layers of cottage cheese, sauce, and noodles for a balanced flavor profile.

  • Choosing the Right Cottage Cheese: Opt for a medium or large curd cottage cheese for texture. If you prefer a creamier consistency, blend the cottage cheese lightly before spreading it into the lasagna.

  • Spice It Up: Fresh herbs, like basil or oregano, can greatly enhance the flavor of your best cottage cheese lasagna. Consider adding a sprinkle of crushed red pepper for a gentle kick if you enjoy some heat.

  • Let It Rest: After baking, allow the lasagna to sit for about 15-20 minutes before cutting. This resting time helps the layers meld and makes serving much easier.

  • Storage Tips: Leftovers? No problem! Lasagna keeps well in the fridge for up to three days. It also freezes beautifully, making it a convenient meal for busy days ahead.

FAQs about Best Cottage Cheese Lasagna

Delving into the world of best cottage cheese lasagna can be so fulfilling, especially when it’s bubbling away in your oven, filling your kitchen with delicious aromas. Here are some common questions I encounter to help you along the way.

Can I use ricotta instead of cottage cheese?

Absolutely, ricotta is a fantastic replacement! While it does have a smoother texture than cottage cheese, it will still lend that creamy goodness. Just remember that ricotta tends to be richer, so your lasagna might turn out a bit heavier. If you love the texture of cottage cheese, you may want to blend ricotta with a little bit of cottage cheese for a balanced approach.

How can I make the lasagna gluten-free?

To make this dish gluten-free, simply swap the traditional lasagna noodles with gluten-free versions. Most grocery stores now have great alternatives made from rice, corn, or quinoa. Just cook them according to the package directions before layering. As a bonus, this substitution often enhances the overall flavor of your best cottage cheese lasagna!

Can I prepare this dish ahead of time?

Yes, you can! I often prepare my lasagna a day in advance. Just assemble it, cover it tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. When you’re ready to bake, remove the wrap and pop it in the oven. There’s no need to thaw, but you might want to extend the baking time by about 5-10 minutes to ensure it’s heated through. This is perfect for busy weeknights or hosting guests.

Description

A delicious traditional lasagna recipe filled with layers of savory meat, creamy cheese, and rich marinara sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2/3 cup chopped white or yellow onion
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 32 ounces marinara sauce
  • 16 ounces small curd cottage cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 10 ounces frozen spinach – thawed with excess moisture squeezed out
  • 12 oven ready lasagna noodles
  • 2 cups low moisture shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh chopped parsley – optional for topping

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat on the stovetop with 1 tablespoon olive oil. Once the pan is hot, add the onion and toss and cook it until translucent.
  2. Then add in the ground beef and break it up in the pan using a wooden spoon. Add the garlic, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt and pepper. Cook the meat until it is no longer pink then turn the heat down to a simmer and stir in the marinara sauce. Cover and simmer the sauce for a few minutes until fragrant.
  3. Add all of the filling ingredients (cottage cheese, eggs, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, parmesan cheese, salt and pepper, frozen spinach) to a medium bowl and mix well to combine.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F and spray a 9×13 lasagna pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Layer 1/2 cup of the sauce mixture in the bottom of the pan, then 3-4 lasagna noodles. It is okay if some are overlapping.
  5. Then layer on more sauce and half of the cottage cheese mixture. Then add another layer of the noodles, sauce, then cheese mixture. I like to add a handful of shredded mozzarella in between the layers but this is optional.
  6. Finish with one last layer of lasagna noodles, the remaining meat sauce and mozzarella cheese.
  7. Spray a large piece of foil with cooking spray and place the sprayed side over the lasagna covering it. Bake the lasagna on the middle rack of the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  8. Remove the foil, increase the oven temperature to 400°F, place the lasagna on the top rack of the oven and bake for 7-10 more minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
  9. Remove the lasagna from the oven and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes. Then top it with fresh parsley, slice and serve!

Notes

  • Make sure to squeeze out the excess moisture from the thawed spinach for a perfect texture.
  • This lasagna can be assembled a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator until ready to bake.
