Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Batter: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
  2. Bake the Cakes: Divide the batter evenly among the three prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  3. Prepare the Chocolate Cream Filling: In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat and stir in the chocolate chips and butter until smooth and glossy. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate until thickened (about 1 hour).
  4. Assemble the Cake: Once the cake layers are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of chocolate cream over the top. Repeat with the second cake layer and more chocolate cream. Place the third layer on top and spread the remaining cream over the top.
