Description

This deliciously rich Orange Chocolate Layer Cake combines the refreshing flavor of orange with decadent chocolate frosting, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Chocolate shavings for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon orange extract (optional)
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the orange zest and vanilla extract.

  4. Combine Wet Ingredients: Mix the orange juice and milk in a separate small bowl.

  5. Combine All: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the orange juice mixture, starting and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

  6. Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.

  7. For the Chocolate Frosting: In a large bowl, beat the butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with heavy cream, beating until well combined. Stir in vanilla extract.

  8. Assembling the Cake: Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a thick layer of chocolate frosting over the top. Place the second cake layer on top, then frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining chocolate frosting. Decorate with chocolate shavings.
